Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a chronic mucosal condition commonly encountered in dental practice. Lichen planus is believed to represent an abnormal immune response in which epithelial cells are recognized as foreign, secondary to changes in the antigenicity of the cell surface. It has various oral manifestations. The aim of the study was to evaluate the morphological characteristics of microcirculation of lingual lichen planus (LLP). Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is an autoimmune disease characterized by endothelial dysfunction and fibroblasts activation. Microvascular disease may be easily observed by means of nailfold capillaroscopy. Recent evidences emphasized also the involvement of large-medium arteries in SSc, mainly in terms of increased stiffness of the vessel wall. The study aims to measure aortic root diameter in a cohort of SSc patients and to correlate echocardiographic findings with the capillaroscopic pictures. When comparing oxygen consumption rates(V O2) of various organs — as shown in Fig. 1 —skeletal muscle is exceptional in two respects: Its consumption rate attains the second largest absolute value of all organs and may vary between rest (0.2 mlO 2.100g-1’• min -1 ) and maximum performance (16 m1O 2.100g-1 • min -1 for electrical stimulation) by a factor of 80, thus covering a range that is by far larger than in any other tissue. In order to understand muscle O 2 transport one has to identify transport mechanisms and evaluate their importance towards bringing about the observed high O 2 fluxes and allowing for their enormous variability.

Background: The aim of this study was to assess the long-term effects of smoking and to investigate the permanence of this damage to the oral microcirculation. Material/Methods: We recruited 75 patients and divided them into 3 groups: group 1 was composed of 25 healthy non-smokers, group 2 was composed of 25 healthy current smokers, and group 3 was composed of 25 healthy ex-smokers.
